My hair is a little longer than shoulder lenth and I have lots of layers. I tried to do this with a 1/2 inch curling iron, that didn't work out.

The 1/2 inch iron should work if you are patient. I would recommend using rollers, though, so that you don't have to do each one. The trick is to be sure to do it in lots of sections.

Take the top layer of hair up and pin it away. Then the bottom layers, spray with hair spray and curl small sections at a time. Leave the iron in until heated, then take the iron out leaving a ringlet in the hair section. Don't take the ringlet out. Continue with all the hair. Leave the ringlets (sectioned curls) in as long as possible. Then, gently blend them. Add a light spray.

Try medium brown lowlights and light blonde highlights, and see if you can get your hair very thin.

I also recommend a flexible hairspray.
